The William Penn Middle School Fitnessgram is a great tool to access our students fitness levels. It is used to show students current levels of physical activity as well as their OWN progression throughout our school year. Our physical education staff has adapated the nationally recognized fitnessgram program to best fit our school and our students.  The goal of our program is for students to see their physical fitness levels increase from the beginning of the school year to end.  Our students will be compared to no one but themelves, with the hope that our physical education program and the fitnessgram testing will provide great results!

Curl Up

core strength

Students lie down with their knees bent, feet flat, and fingers at the top of the tape line. When they curl up, fingers will go completely across the tape while heels stay flat. Students hold for cadence and then return to starting position.

Push Up
muscular strength & muscular endurance

Students hands are placed shoulder width or just slightly further than shoulder width apart. When students come down with their chest, their elbows should be at a 90 degree angle. Students hold position with body flat, untill they hear a beep for their cadence to return to starting position.

Sit and Reach, Shoulder Stretch

flexibility

Sit and Reach measures hamstring flexibity. One leg is straight while the other is bent with the sole on the floor. Students reach forward and hold for a measurement, doing so for each leg.

Shoulder Stretch measure upper arm and shoulder flexibility. Students reach over their back with one arm while trying to touch with other arm underneath

Pacer Test & Mile Run

aerobic capacity

The mile run requires students to run 4 laps on our track to acheive their own personal best time.

The pacer test requires students to run between 2 lines set 15 meters apart. Students run to a cadence which gradually becomes shorter, making the students run faster.
